Design, Create, and Play - these are the three main tenets of LEAD.
Design.
LEAD
believes in the great educational value of learning by designing.
It is through design that children
become constructing architects of
their own learning. LEAD engages children as active
participants, giving them a greater sense of control and responsibility
for the learning process. Design activities help cultivate
children's personal connections to knowledge.
Design projects are also interdisciplinary;
they allow multiple entry points into science, technology, engineering,
multimedia, art and music. Through designing of motorized robots and
formulating ideas for animation, simulation, multimedia presentation
and musical composition, children not only reflect on and apply already
familiar concepts, but also come in direct contact with new knowledge
in a playful way. LEAD encourages children to be more observant
in their physical world and to merge different knowledge in their
design.
Create.
LEAD
believes in constructionism.
The constructionist approach
to education, developed by Professor Seymour Papert at MIT, holds that
learners construct new knowledge especially well when they are engaged
in constructing things which they find personally meaningful.
A wide array of construction materials - building bricks, small
programmable computers, motors, sensors, gears, arts and crafts
materials etc. - allows children to apply
different disciplines of knowledge in their design.
Play.
LEAD
believes in playful learning.
It is
through play that children become intrinsically
motivated in creative inquiry, inventive exploration, and in
constructing things that they find fascinating.
Children
exercise their imagination, test out ideas, explore new possibilities,
and refine their creativity through play. As children playfully
explore and experiment, they develop new ideas and new ways of thinking
about the world around them.
Creative
Learning through Design, Create and Play
Through designing, creating and
playing with technologies, LEAD engages children in a fun-filled,
learner-centered environment that supports multiple learning styles and
representations of knowledge.
